Gama Navodhaya” Scheme by Aitken Spence Cargo |
| |
Aitken Spence Cargo recently reiterated their commitment to continue supporting Dedunupitiya Maha Vidyalaya, in Mawanella, as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. An MOU to this effect was signed by Mr. Rohantha Peiris, Managing Director of Aitken Spence Cargo and Mr. Wijeratne , Principal, Dedunupitiya Maha Vidyalaya at a simple ceremony held at Aitken Spence Cargo. This is an extension of the company’s scheme of Re-awakening the Village - “Gama Navodhaya” through being involved in village development/ improvement projects. Aitken Spence Cargo had selected Dedunupitiya Maha Vidyalaya as it is a school situated in one of the Food Insecurity Areas as identified by the World Food Program.
 |
Aitken Spence Cargo plans to carry out career guidance and mentoring programs to the students in the school’s G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level classes. These programmes will be conducted by Aitken Spence Group Human Resource Division in keeping with current training needs and trends. Aitken Spence Cargo hopes this exercise will help the students to reach greater heights. In addition to this Aitken Spence Cargo intends providing selected students with on the job training leading to full time employment.
This is a continuation of Aitken Spence Cargo’s project initiated in 2006 for the improvement of Dedunupitiya Maha Vidyalaya, where the company staff participated in a ‘Shramadana’ campaign at the school. The school building was colour washed, and a new name board was installed. A boundary fence was also constructed, and a computer was donated to the staff of the school. A pipeline was installed as well, to provide fresh water for the students and staff. Speaking at the ceremony, Principal Wijeratne said “ The facelift to the school and the interest shown by Aitken Spence Cargo has resulted in more students being attracted to this once dilapidated school. This itself is a great achievement as more children are now attending school from this area and this will improve the literacy rate of the village.”

Managing Director's message
requesting Aid for Tsunami affected.
|
As you may
be already aware Sri Lanka has been one of the worst
affected countries due to Sunday's earth quake in Asia.
The destruction and damage to lives have been extensive
and we have news that even some of our staff members
are affected. We are still not been able to communicate
with some of our staff believed to have been in the
affected areas on the ill fated day.
The country is doing its best to
provide urgent relief to all victims. Many governmental
and private sector organisations are actively involved
in the relief effort. We as a company also have arranged
to provide help in cash & kind to the victims.
In addition we are doing every thing possible to find
out information about our affected staff to help them
on a urgent basis.
We appreciate the concerns
of many of you and are grateful for your genuine desire
to help the victims in this hour of need. Our group
has taken immediate measures to organise relief especially
for people to start their lives again by helping in
the re-construction of houses and providing other
essentials. Aitken Spence & Company, our parent
company has opened a bank account dedicated for collection
of funds, the account details are given below.

We consider it as our corporate responsibility and has

In the meantime business is coming back to normalcy
in all parts of the country except the affected. The
airport is functioning as usual and the sea port should
be operating from today or latest by tomorrow. Being
a holiday season the impact on the production and import
& exports activity is less, the economic activity
should revert back to normalcy within a couple of days
time. We will keep you posted of the developments and

the situation in Sri Lanka please do not hesitate to
